1. The Flaming Lips

The Flaming Lips began cutting their teeth in the music industry in 1983. Their fervor for the eccentric, the operatic and the edgy has not diminished one bit. Their brand of thespian rock has pushed the limits of live performance for over 3 decades.

2. Tove Lo

Tove Lo is new to the music scene but her sweeping ballads that combine the narrative prowess of Raymond Carver and the indelible beats of CHVRCHS have made her an immediate force in the music world. Her songs are a cinematic trip into the soul. This is epitimized in her inclusion in the blockbuster soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.

3. Young The Giant

The band from Cali just finished their set for 97x's Next Big Thing concert at Vinoy Park. Young The Giant fuses high energy lyrics with pop inspired anthems that recall the genius of Coconut Records and R.E.M. The band ahs already held the shared awe of a sold out St. Pete crowd before, and it seems the band and the city are eager to enjoy one another again.

4. Ghost Of A Saber Toothed Tiger

It's no surprise that Sean Lennon, son of music icon John Lennon, burst into the music scene. His songs are a metaphysical rabbit hole that will turn a oil on asphalt into a shimmering black hole. Ghost Of A Saber Toothed Tiger (GOASTT), formed with girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl, is a band that cannot be defined by genre. As delicate as a Petrarchan Sonnet, as serene as The Beatles at their best, as cerebral as Kurt Vile, GOASTT is a new evolution in music.

5. Airborne Toxic Event

Named after a chapter in Don DeLillo's dystopian masterpiece White Noise, Airbone Toxic Event entered the cultural conversation in 2008. The band has found a synergy between orchestra and post-rock which compliments lead singer Mikel Jolette's prosaic approach to songwriting. Whether performing 30 consecutive nights in a row overseas, or combining their sound with the Calder Quartet, Airborne Toxic event has cemented themselves into music history.

6. Future Islands

Baltimore seems to be the incubator for artistic ingenuity. The synthpop band Future Islands formed in 2006 while studying at East Carolina University. Their collective comprehension of rhythm is reminiscent of Bowie and Morrissey. The band's soft insignia is laced into every chord played and lyric sung.
