One of the area’s most unique art displays is being extended through the end of 2022. SPACEcraft, the traveling art installation from Creative Pinellas, announced that its popular shipping container studios will continue delivering the community high quality arts experiences through this December.

SPACEcraft is a socially-engaged traveling project designed and produced by local artists Carrie Boucher, Bridget Elmer, and Mitzi Gordon. Aimed at building a sense of community by encouraging people of all ages to interact and create together, the project presents free, hands-on activities four times per week, with the themes of Make, Play, Read, and Grow. All of it is housed inside two shipping containers that travel to a variety of open-air Pinellas locations.

This one-of-a-kind project is funded by the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners and is scheduled to travel throughout the county with new stops every eight weeks. Always-accessible interactive activities include a magnetic poetry wall, magnetic mural, playable Duplo block wall, and public plant share.

Upcoming locations include Barlett Park from 5-7 pm on Thursday, April 28, Saturday April 30, and Thursday, May 5. The roaming installation can be also be experienced at Clymer Park on Wednesdays and Friday from 5-7 pm, now through May 6. Learn more and see the full schedule here.

SPACEcraft has shared 14 deployments at 12 different Pinellas County sites

Since its soft launch in July 2020, SPACEcraft has traveled continuously throughout the county, moving every eight weeks to a new public park. The containers travel separately, opening several times a week to offer participant-driven programming guided by artists, musicians, writers, performers, educators and other partnering creatives.

  • Read: Reading room presenting poetry and storytelling, a free library, writing workshops, zine making.
  • Grow: Personal/community growth space offering yoga, meditation, gardening, nutrition, nature crafts, personal wellness.

Sessions are led by local and visiting artists, who share simple, inspiring projects such as seed planting, drum circles, clay sculpture, jewelry making, book making, and more. Public parks have hosted SPACEcraft in Palm Harbor, Seminole, Largo, Lealman, Dunedin, Gulfport, and St. Petersburg.

“During the past two years we’ve had an incredible experience getting to know our Pinellas County neighbors better with each deployment,” said Carrie Boucher of the SPACEcraft Artist Team. “We’re excited for the opportunity to continue this project that encourages people to do the same, by mindfully spending time sharing creativity in unexpected spaces.”
